Blue Lock (ブルーロック) is a Japanese manga series written by Muneyuki Kaneshiro and illustrated by Yusuke Nomura. It began serialization in Weekly Shōnen Magazine in August 2018 and has released 33 volumes as of March 2025. The story follows Yoichi Isagi, a high school soccer player who joins Blue Lock, a radical training program created by the eccentric coach Jinpachi Ego. After Japan’s national team places 16th in the 2018 World Cup, Ego is tasked with revolutionizing Japanese soccer by producing the world’s greatest striker—an egotist who prioritizes scoring above all else. Players who fail are banned from representing Japan. The series received an anime adaptation from studio Eight Bit, airing from October 2022 to March 2023. A film based on the Episode Nagi spin-off debuted in April 2024, followed by a second season (vs. U-20 Japan) airing from October to December 2024. By March 2025, Blue Lock had over 45 million copies in circulation, making it one of the best-selling manga series ever. It also won the 45th Kodansha Manga Award for Best Shōnen Manga in 2021.
